Re: Reservoir Operating Plan Evaluation
To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is a formal request to the Army Corps of Engineers to strongly voice
opposition to the operating plans proposed on September 10, 2008 for the Cross
Lake/Pine River Dam and the Whitefish Reservoir (referred to as ROPE). The
proposed plans have been reviewed and we do not believe that the minimal benefits
stated as a result of the proposal balance the very significant problems that will
result. The changes proposed by the Corps of Engineers are small but have far
reaching consequences to thousands of individuals, scores businesses, and local
and county government.
The major issues are the navigation problems this plan will cause, the reduction
in the property values for owners of lakeshore property on the Whitefish Chain,
the economic problems for local retailers and the impact on the tourism industry
due to a shorter season for use of the lakes and the potential problems caused
by reduced property values on the tax base of Crow Wing County and the local
municipalities.
The Whitefish Chain is one of the premier summer recreation attractions in
Minnesota. The minor benefits stated in the material that accompanied the proposed
plan changes simply do not warrant making any changes in the operating plans for the
dam or the reservoir. The plan that has been followed for many years has made the
Whitefish Chain a very attractive place to live and enjoy lake life in
northern Minnesota.
In short: DO NOT CHANGE THE OPERATING PLAN.
